The Short Answer
Yes, This Is Likely A Scam If…
The email shows a renewal for an antivirus subscription you don’t have (or for an amount higher than usual), and includes a phone number in the body telling you to call to cancel. The number is the trap — they’ll talk you into installing remote-access software to "process" your refund.
Quick Risk Checklist
If any of these match the message you got, treat it as a scam until you’ve verified directly with the real company or agency.
- ⚠You don’t have a current Norton or McAfee subscription.
- ⚠The amount is unusually round — $299, $349, $499.
- ⚠There’s a phone number in the email asking you to call to cancel or dispute.
- ⚠The sender domain isn’t exactly @norton.com or @mcafee.com.
- ⚠The email has no real account link — just a PDF invoice and the phone number.
- ⚠Buttons hover to non-norton.com / non-mcafee.com URLs.
What The Scam Looks Like
Here’s the actual wording from a real scam — links are defanged so you can’t accidentally tap them.
“Defanged” means we replaced the dot in the URL with [.] so it can’t be clicked. Scam URLs stay unclickable on this page on purpose.
What To Do Right Now
If you got this and haven’t tapped anything yet, here’s the order of operations.
- •Don’t call the number in the email. Real Norton and McAfee handle disputes inside your account, not via phone numbers in invoice emails.
- •Don’t click any buttons. Open a new browser tab and go directly to my.norton.com or home.mcafee.com.
- •Check your real subscriptions after signing in. If no charge exists, the email is fake.
- •Mark as phishing in your inbox, then delete. Forward to spoof@norton.com (Norton) or phishing@mcafee.com (McAfee).

How To Verify A Norton Or McAfee Renewal Safely
- •Type my.norton.com or home.mcafee.com directly. Sign in and check your real subscription status.
- •Check your card statement. Real renewals appear on your card with the vendor name — match the date and amount against the email.
- •Real support is inside your account. Never use a phone number from an email body to handle billing disputes.
- •If you do need to call, use the number listed at norton.com/contactus or mcafee.com/support — never from an email.

Common Questions
Why Are These So Common?
Norton and McAfee have tens of millions of customers — scammers know that many people remember installing one years ago. Pretending to be them at renewal time is the perfect pretext.
What Happens If I Call The Number?
A scammer answers, claims they need to "process the refund" via remote access (TeamViewer or AnyDesk), then uses that access to fake a refund of more than you’re owed and demands you wire back the difference. It’s the classic refund scam.
I Installed TeamViewer / AnyDesk — What Now?
Uninstall immediately. Disconnect from internet. Run a full antivirus scan. Change your banking passwords, your email password, and call your bank to ask about freezing or watching the account closely for the next 30 days.
Can A Real Norton/McAfee Charge Show Up I Forgot About?
Yes — auto-renewals are real. The way to confirm is by logging into your vendor account directly, not by calling a number in an email. If you find an unwanted real charge, cancel inside the account, then dispute the charge with your card issuer.
Will Norton Or McAfee Ever Email Me With A Phone Number?
Real billing emails usually link to your account where you can dispute. Real phone support lines are listed on norton.com/contactus or mcafee.com/support. Numbers embedded in random invoice emails are almost always scams.
