The Short Answer
Yes, This Is A Scam If…
The IRS does not initiate contact via text, email, or social media. Any text claiming to be the IRS asking you to click a link, share info, or pay anything is a scam — full stop.
Quick Risk Checklist
If any of these match the message you got, treat it as a scam until you’ve verified directly with the real company or agency.
- ⚠The message claims to be from the IRS, "Internal Revenue Service," or a "Tax Refund Department."
- ⚠It offers you an unclaimed refund and asks you to tap a link to claim it.
- ⚠The link doesn’t end in irs.gov.
- ⚠It asks for your Social Security number, bank account, or date of birth.
- ⚠It threatens arrest, lawsuit, or wage garnishment if you don’t act.
- ⚠It asks for payment via gift card, wire transfer, crypto, or any payment app.
What The Scam Looks Like
Here’s the actual wording from a real scam — links are defanged so you can’t accidentally tap them.
“Defanged” means we replaced the dot in the URL with [.] so it can’t be clicked. Scam URLs stay unclickable on this page on purpose.
What To Do Right Now
If you got this and haven’t tapped anything yet, here’s the order of operations.
- •Don’t tap the link. The IRS does not text. Anything claiming to be the IRS via text is fake.
- •Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
- •Also forward to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov — they track these for criminal investigation.
- •Delete the message. Block the sender if your phone allows it.
What If You Already…
Don’t panic. Most damage is undoable if you act quickly. Pick the one that applies and follow the recovery steps.

How To Verify Anything Tax-Related Safely
- •Go to irs.gov directly by typing it into your browser. Bookmark the real URL.
- •Check your real refund status at the official "Where’s My Refund?" tool: irs.gov/refunds.
- •The IRS sends letters by mail. Real IRS notices arrive via USPS on official letterhead with a notice number (CP01, CP14, etc.) you can verify.
- •Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 if you want to check whether they’re trying to reach you. Use that number, not anything in the text.

Scam Check Quiz
Is This IRS Refund Text A Scam?
Answer Yes or No for each. We’ll give you a score and 3 specific next steps.
Common Questions
Does The IRS Ever Text Or Email Me?
No. The IRS makes first contact by USPS mail. They may text or email you after — but only if you’ve enrolled in something specific like the Identity Protection PIN program. They never solicit info or payment by text.
How Do I Know If My Refund Is Real?
Check "Where’s My Refund?" at irs.gov/refunds. You’ll need your SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount from your return.
I Gave Up My SSN — What Now?
Place a fraud alert with one of the three credit bureaus (it auto-applies to all three), file an Identity Theft Affidavit at IdentityTheft.gov, and get an IRS Identity Protection PIN at irs.gov/ippin so no one can file in your name.
Can Real IRS Refunds Come Through Direct Deposit Requests Via Text?
No. The IRS sends refunds based on what you put on your tax return, not from a text confirmation. Anything asking you to "confirm direct deposit" via a link is fake.
Are Foreign IRS Variants Real?
Some are state-level (your state’s department of revenue) and some are foreign (CRA in Canada, HMRC in the UK). The rule is the same: governments do not collect via gift cards, crypto, or panic texts. Type the agency’s real URL yourself to verify.
