The Short Answer

Yes, This Is Likely A Scam If…

The text comes from a regular 10-digit number (not Wells Fargo’s 935-57 short code), asks you to reply YES/NO or call a number to dispute, and gets followed up by a phone call asking you to send Zelle to yourself. Real Wells Fargo alerts come from a published short code and never require Zelle reversal.

Quick Risk Checklist

If any of these match the message you got, treat it as a scam until you’ve verified directly with the real company or agency.

  • The sender is a 10-digit number, not Wells Fargo’s 935-57 short code.
  • The text asks you to reply YES/NO to confirm or call a number.
  • A follow-up call comes within minutes from the "Wells fraud team."
  • The caller asks you to send Zelle to your own phone number to "reverse" the charge.
  • They ask for the last 4 of your card or your online banking PIN to "verify identity."
  • You don’t have a Wells Fargo account at all.

What The Scam Looks Like

Here’s the actual wording from a real scam — links are defanged so you can’t accidentally tap them.

From: +1 (415) 555-0167
WELLS FARGO ALERT: Zelle transfer of $1,200 to JOHN MILLER pending. Reply YES if authorized, NO to decline. Reply HELP for help.
(no link — the YES/NO reply triggers the scam call)

“Defanged” means we replaced the dot in the URL with [.] so it can’t be clicked. Scam URLs stay unclickable on this page on purpose.

What To Do Right Now

If you got this and haven’t tapped anything yet, here’s the order of operations.

  1. Don’t reply YES or NO. Either reply confirms your number is live and triggers the follow-up call.
  2. Open the Wells Fargo app directly and check Recent Activity. Any real pending Zelle transfer shows there.
  3. If anything looks real, lock your debit card from the app and call Wells Fargo at the number on the back of your card — not from the text.
  4. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and report to Wells Fargo at reportphish@wellsfargo.com.

How To Verify A Wells Fargo Alert Safely

  1. Real Wells Fargo texts come from short code 935-57. Anything else is fake.
  2. Open the Wells Fargo app and check Recent Activity directly. Real Zelle transactions pending or completed will appear there.
  3. Call Wells Fargo at 1-800-869-3557 — the number printed on your card. Use this number, not anything in a text.
  4. Use the app’s debit card lock immediately if compromised. You can unlock later.

Common Questions

What Short Code Does Wells Fargo Use?

Wells Fargo fraud alerts come from short code 935-57. Account alerts come from 93557 too. Any "Wells Fargo" text from a regular 10-digit number is a scam.

Why Do They Always Mention Zelle?

Because Zelle is instant and irreversible — the perfect tool for cleaning out an account. The "Zelle yourself" closer is the most common Wells-specific scam in 2026.

I Replied YES — What Now?

Expect a follow-up call within minutes. Don’t answer unknown numbers for the next few days. Open the Wells Fargo app to check that no Zelle transfers are queued, and consider changing your online banking password as a precaution.

Caller ID Said "Wells Fargo Fraud Dept" — Can I Trust That?

No. Caller ID is trivially spoofed. Hang up and call 1-800-869-3557 (the number on the back of your card) to verify.

Does The Real Wells Fargo Ever Ask Me To Send Money To Myself?

Never. No bank does. That instruction alone is conclusive proof you’re talking to a scammer.
